Except some low quality coffee machines, almost all better quality coffee filters are using chemical phpto etching for the production of their stainless steel coffee filters, as chemical phpto etching can do precision etching without difficulty in lower cost than other production process like stamping or laser cutting etc.by metal chemical etching,we can easily have a micro filter mesh for coffee filter, the thiner the material(normally it is stainless steel), the smaller the filter holes can be, the filter quality is better for the coffee filters, the coffee filtered out in this way tastes much smoother,so if you need a better quality, the coffee filter thickness need to be as thin as possible.
But why the coffee filter can‘t use the thinest metal?
Because the thiner the metal material,the softer the metal filter will be, which means a smaller load-bearing capacity for the filterand not durable or not long-lasting,that also means not good quality.
The same you may ask why the coffee filter can‘t use a thicker material to have the same smaller holes?
Because the thicker of the metal material, the longer the chemical reaction time will be when the chemical acid is aprayed to the metal surface,which results in a larger holes etched.
